Learn Basic Combinations through games. This approach helps learners visualize how combinations work in real-life situations, improves retention of concepts, and reduces anxiety toward mathematics.
Instructions for Counting Combinations
A combination is a way of selecting a group of items from a larger set, where the order of selection does not matter. For example, choosing 2 students from a group of 5 gives the same result whether Anna is picked before Ben or Ben before Anna — both count as a single combination. This is different from a permutation, where the order does matter.
The number of possible combinations is found using the formula nCr = n! / (r!(n−r)!), where n is the total number of items available and r is the number of items being chosen. This game connects that formula to everyday situations — such as forming a committee, choosing toppings for a pizza, or selecting players for a team — and then gives students practice applying the formula directly using standard combination notation (nCr).
This material is well suited for introducing combinatorics as part of a probability and statistics unit, and works equally well for initial instruction, homework practice, or review before a test or exam.
1. Word Problem Scenarios (Text answer questions with real-world situations)
Questions with Text Answers - The level consists of 10 questions and all of them are practiced in every game round. The student must enter the correct answer without any hints and has 3 hearts (extra tries) to write the correct word or sentence in each question's text field. Answers are not case-sensitive. The student has 3 hearts, giving them another chance at missed questions during a game round. The student does not receive any feedback when writing the answer, which makes the task a bit more difficult. Questions have text-to-speech in English. There is no time limit. When the student has written all the answers correctly, the game round is completed. If it is too difficult, the player can click the button labeled Cancel - then the correct answers will be displayed - and try to complete the level again.2.
