The game Common hobbies

Practise common English hobby vocabulary through engaging activities. Perfect for building confidence with everyday leisure words and phrases.

Instructions for Common hobbies

This game helps students build vocabulary around common hobbies and leisure activities in English. The words and phrases covered include guitar, music, singing, drawing, playing video games, football, skiing, horse riding, reading books, handball, floorball, and swimming.

Students practise both the individual hobby words and how to use them naturally in sentences — for example, knowing that in English we say go swimming, play football, and go horse riding rather than simply swim, football, or riding. This is an important aspect of hobby vocabulary that learners often find tricky.

The game is well suited for use as an introduction to a hobbies topic, as consolidation practice after classroom instruction, or as an independent activity for students to complete at their own pace.

1. Hobbies – Word Search (Letter Grid)

Letter GridLetter Grid - The level consists of 18 words, but a maximum of 10 words are practiced per game round. The player is shown a board with letters arranged in a grid and must drag the mouse pointer or finger over the letters until the word is found. The words to be found are placed on the board as 4-way straight words and they are listed in plain text next to the board. If the student manages to find all the words, the round is won. There is no time limit. If it is too difficult, the player can click the button labeled Cancel - then the correct words will be displayed - and try to complete the level again.

2. Hobbies – Picture Match (Memory)

MemoryMemory - The level consists of 15 pairs (consisting of words paired with pictures), but a maximum of 10 pairs are practiced per game round. The student's task is to find two cards that match. If two matching cards are found, they are removed from the board. The game is finished when all 10 pairs of cards have been found and no cards are left on the board. There is no limit to the number of allowed misses, so the only thing that counts is finding all card pairs. There is no time limit. If it is too difficult, the player can click the button labeled Cancel - then it will show which pairs of cards match - and try to complete the level again.

3. Hobbies - Matching (Link image clues and descriptions to hobby words)

Link UpLink Up - The level consists of 10 questions (all of which have pictures) and all of them are practiced in every game round. The player's task is to link the 10 questions in the colored boxes with the most appropriate answers in the white boxes. Each colored box can only be linked to one white box and vice versa. The student receives feedback on their links Before submission. The student has 3 hearts, giving them another chance at missed links during a game round. Questions have text-to-speech in English. Answers have text-to-speech in English. There is no time limit. When the student has linked all the boxes correctly, the game round is completed. If it is too difficult, the player can click the button labeled Cancel - then the correct links are displayed - and try to complete the level again.

4. Hobbies – Fill in the Blanks (Cloze Test)

Cloze TestCloze Test - The level consists of 1 cloze text. In the game, the student is presented with 1 question texts where certain parts (words or numbers) are hidden. These words or numbers have been replaced by fields where the student must either fill in the correct word, or select the correct word from a list. Sometimes, there's a question mark ? after the blank - if the player clicks on it a hint will be shown. A cloze text usually requires the reader to understand the context of the text in order to fill in the blank with the correct word. It may therefore be necessary to read the text several times. The student has 3 hearts (tries) for each fill-in-the-blank. The student has 3 hearts, giving them another chance at missed cloze texts during a game round. The colze texts have text-to-speech in English. There is no time limit. When the student has filled in all the blanks correctly, the game round is complete. If any blank is too difficult, the student can click the Cancel button - this shows all the correct answers to the gaps - and the player can try to complete the cloze text again.

5. Hobbies - Order (Put in Order)

Put in OrderPut in Order - The level contains 10 questions and all of them are practiced in every game round. The player's task is to drag the pieces to their correct places in the order. The student has 3 hearts, giving them another chance at missed questions during a game round. There is no time limit. When the student has ordered all the pieces correctly, the round is completed. If it is too difficult, you can click the Give up button – then the correct order is shown – and the player can try to complete the level again.
