Instructions for Articles - a, an, the or none

In these exercises you get the opportunity to practise the English articles with sentences and themes connected to the winter time.

We use a to talk about a singular non-specific noun that starts with a consonant sound. Example: I want to read a book about ice skating (I don't care what specific book it is as long as it is about ice skating).

We use an to talk about a singular non-specific noun that starts with a vowel sound. Example: I want to eat an apple (I don't care about, for example, whether the apple is red or green).

We use the to talk about both singular and plurar nouns that are specific. Example: I want the book on ice skating written by Kris Kringle, or I want the apple that is on top of the pile.

We don't use articles when talking about non-specific plurals, uncountable nouns (knowledge, water, etc.), nouns with names (people, places, etc.), sports, meals, transport, days, months, routine places (at home, to school, at work...).

Examples:
I am going to - London to play - football on - Monday.
After - work I'm going - home by - bus.

1. Singular & Plural (non-specific)

Multiple choiceMultiple choice - The level consists of 10 questions and all are practiced every game round. For each question, the player is given three possible answers. Only one of these is correct. It is up to the player to choose the correct alternative. The student has 3 hearts (extra lives) that keep the game round going. There is no time limit. When the student has selected all the correct answers, the game round is completed. If it is too difficult, the player can click the button named Cancel - then the correct answers will be displayed - and then try to complete the level again.

3. Singular (Specific or nonspecific)

Cloze testCloze test - The level consists of 10 cloze texts and all are practiced every game round. The order of the cloze texts is randomized each game round. In the game, the student is presented with 10 questions texts where certain parts (words or numbers) are hidden. These words or numbers have been replaced by fields where the student must either fill in the correct word, or select the correct word from a list. Sometimes, there's a question mark ? after the blank - if the player clicks on it a hint will be shown. The student has 3 attempts to write the correct word in the game's blanks. A cloze text usually requires the reader to understand the context of the text in order to fill in the blank with the correct word. It may therefore be necessary to read the text several times. There is no time limit. When the student has filled in all the blanks correctly, the game round is complete. If any blank is too difficult, the student can click the Cancel button - this shows all the correct answers to the gaps - and the player can try to complete the cloze text again.

4. Plural (Specific or nonspecific)

Cloze testCloze test - The level consists of 6 cloze texts and all are practiced every game round. The order of the cloze texts is randomized each game round.
