The game Past continuous / progressive

Practise verbs with the usage of past continuous/progressive tense in English.

Instructions for Past continuous / progressive

Here you can practise the usage of the past continuous tense (or past progressive tense) on English verbs.

Past continuous / progressive is created by combining was/were + gerund (-ingform). We use the past continuous/progressive when talking about a longer action in the past that was interrupted by a shorter one.

Example: I was reading a book when the phone rang.

The longer activity (reading) was interrupted by the shorter one (the phone ringing). Often we can think of the continuous/progressive form as something happening in the background, whereas the past simple is the main event.

If you find it difficult to decide what verb should be in the gerund form, try adding the English word 'suddenly':

I was reading a book when, suddenly, the phone rang.
The phone was ringing when, suddenly, I read.

1. Choose the right one (Past cont., 3 extra attempts)

Multiple choiceMultiple choice - The level consists of 10 multiple choice questions and all of them are practiced in every game round. For each question, the player is given three possible answers, only one of which is correct. It is up to the player to choose the correct option. The student has 3 hearts, giving them another chance at missed multiple choice questions during a game round. Questions have text-to-speech in English. Answers have text-to-speech in English. There is no time limit. When the student has selected all the correct answers, the game round is completed. If it is too difficult, the player can click the button labeled Cancel - then the correct answers will be displayed - and try to complete the level again.

2. Choose the right one (Past cont., no extra attempts)

Multiple choiceMultiple choice - The level consists of 10 multiple choice questions and all of them are practiced in every game round. For each question, the player is given three possible answers, only one of which is correct. It is up to the player to choose the correct option. If the student answers a multiple choice question incorrectly, the game round can be continued, but the round is marked as not completed. Questions have text-to-speech in English. Answers have text-to-speech in English. There is no time limit. When the student has selected all the correct answers, the game round is completed. If it is too difficult, the player can click the button labeled Cancel - then the correct answers will be displayed - and try to complete the level again.

3. Write the right form (Past Cont./Prog.)

Questions with text answersQuestions with text answers - The level consists of 10 questions and all of them are practiced in every game round. The student must enter the correct answer without any hints and has 3 hearts (extra tries) to write the correct word or sentence in each question's text field. Answers are not case-sensitive. The student has 3 hearts, giving them another chance at missed questions during a game round. The student receives feedback on each keystroke to make it easier to type the correct answer. If the entered character is correct, the text turns green and if it's incorrect, the text turns red. Questions have text-to-speech in English. There is no time limit. When the student has written all the answers correctly, the game round is completed. If it is too difficult, the player can click the button labeled Cancel - then the correct answers will be displayed - and try to complete the level again.

4. Write the right form (Both past forms)

Cloze testCloze test - The level consists of 10 cloze texts and all of them are practiced in every game round. The order of the cloze texts is randomized each game round. In the game, the student is presented with 10 questions texts where certain parts (words or numbers) are hidden. These words or numbers have been replaced by fields where the student must either fill in the correct word, or select the correct word from a list. Sometimes, there's a question mark ? after the blank - if the player clicks on it a hint will be shown. A cloze text usually requires the reader to understand the context of the text in order to fill in the blank with the correct word. It may therefore be necessary to read the text several times. The student has 3 hearts (tries) for each fill-in-the-blank. The student has 3 hearts, giving them another chance at missed cloze texts during a game round. The colze texts have text-to-speech in English. There is no time limit. When the student has filled in all the blanks correctly, the game round is complete. If any blank is too difficult, the student can click the Cancel button - this shows all the correct answers to the gaps - and the player can try to complete the cloze text again.
